Malaga historical city centre has in recent years undergone a huge renovation and the city centre has regained its charm and many new restaurants, bars and tapas bars have recently opened. The best tapas bar in Malaga is called Cortijo de Pepe and has just celebrated it´s 40th birthday in March. When we go on a city break, it has become more and more important for us to try a local restaurant. Since many large chains are presented in many big cities with the same kind of food, then we want to try something different and local. In short – we want to eat like the locals.
Cortijo de Pepe is one of these places. The tapas bar is located on Plaza de la Merced in the heart of Malaga and if you never tried to eat Spanish tapas, then this is where you should start. Here you find the real Spanish atmosphere, a wide selection of tapas and most of all a unique experience.
At Cortijo de Pepe it has been important to hold on to tradition and therefore the staff, the cozy bar and menu is basically the same as when they opened 40 years ago. Here you will not find a menu in various languages and also not an English speaking staff, but an authentic tapas bar in the heart of Malaga with really good food and friendly staff. And as the owner says “we always know what our guests want, though we do not speak the same language.”
Cortijo de Pepe offer a fantastic atmosphere and a tapas bar that is decorated in traditional Andalusian style with tiles on the walls and high ceilings. In the bar you will see several Jamon Serrano (Spanish ham) hanging. Spanish ham is almost the national dish in Spain and also has to be tested when you visit Cortijo de Pepe. The restaurant is situated on the first floor where you can eat a big meal, while the tapas bar is located at the ground level. It is also possible to enjoy the food on the small terrace.
At the bar you will find a fridge with approximately 20 different tapas and from here you can pick a few favorites and have them severed in the bar with a good glass of wine or a cold glass of beer. Tapas are served either cold or hot depending on what you choose. The menu offers several dishes and Cortijo de Pepe is famous for its “Montadito the Lomo” which is a burger with pork chop. The menu card offers many different dishes such as salads, various fish, steaks, cheese and ham and much more.
Prices are very reasonable and the quality is high. The staff is very professional and brings whatever you like fast. So are you going on tapas bar in Malaga, our recommendation is without any doubt Cortijo de Pepe. Perhaps the best tapas bar in the world.
You will find Cortijo de Pepe on Plaza de la Merced 2, 29012 Malaga.
